Microsuction: a great alternative to ear syringing

Microsuction is the safest and most comfortable method of ear wax removal or clearing blocked ears. Our Microsuction appointments are available with Audiologists and GPs in Chelmsford, Colchester and South Woodham Ferrers, Essex - and can help to restore your hearing.

About Microsuction

Microsuction is a method of ear wax removal that has a proven record of being more effective compared to other techniques, such as ear syringing. Our GP or Audiologist will use a powerful microscope to see the build-up of wax or presence of a foreign object in your ear which may be causing a blockage, and will remove it using a small, gentle suction tool. Unlike ear syringing, or ear irrigation, which cause the ear to get wet, Microsuction uses suction with pin point accuracy to extract the wax and therefore offers a solution for people who have previously had ear infections or a perforated ear drum.

The procedure is relatively pain free and will rarely cause any significant discomfort. Our Microsuction appointments and the treatment are normally completed within 30 minutes. In rare cases a second visit may be required to allow remaining wax to soften for complete removal.

Preparing for your appointment:

There are a few simple steps that might be advisable to take before your appointment, to make your treatment more effective.

Applying 1-2 drops of olive oil or sodium bicarbonate ear drops in the affected ear/s, twice a day for 48 hours prior to your Microsuction appointment, should make the procedure more comfortable and help to achieve the best results for you. Please note, this is not recommended if you have a perforated ear drum or are experiencing pain in your ear/s.

If you have any doubts or questions about preparing for your appointment, these can be discussed at the time of booking.

Do I need Microsuction?

A build-up of wax or blockage in the ear can be the result of many factors, including: the incorrect use of cotton buds, ear-worn devices such as hearing aids which can prevent wax from coming out of the ear canal freely, excessive use of ear phones, or even having hairy ears.

If you experience symptoms including ear ache, a reduction in your ability to hear, or a blocked feeling in your ear, then you may have a blockage. If you have any of these indicators, it's advisable to have your ears checked by a GP or Nurse to confirm that these symptoms are not caused by another condition. We would be happy to discuss this with you, so if you are unsure give us a call before booking.

Customer Feedback...

  • Thank you for seeing and assessing me so promptly. You really put my mind at ease and prevented an unnecessary trip to the GP which as it turns out would not have yielded any benefit or sorted out the problem I came to you about.
    Happy Customer, Chelmsford
I found your service thorough and professional. Additionally, I was really delighted to be able to have the time to discuss fully the issues with such an experienced professional. Indeed, following the assessment the advice and treatment you recommended appear to have sorted out a long term problem that was getting worse and causing me increasing pain and discomfort. Many thanks.
    Jackie, Colchester
  • The speed of service, the professionalism shown and the care taken to assess my injuries were second to none. The advice given by Wellbeing helped vastly speed up my recovery and the ongoing support has been invaluable.
    Mike, Colchester
I'd been putting off going to my GP for a very long time but when my wife mentioned Wellbeing and that I could get an appointment the same week I thought I might as well go for it. I'm so glad I did, my Wellbeing Audiologist was so knowledgeable and took the time to explain both the Microsuction procedure and my condition to me. Understanding why my ears give me so much trouble also put my mind at rest, which has made me a lot happier

  • My Mum attended A&E on Sunday as she was feeling dizzy and unwell.  She had a thorough check over and was discharged but told that her ears were blocked.  She attended her GP on Monday who could not help, I phoned Wellbeing on Tuesday morning and was able to an appointment with Jo later that day and it has made a huge improvement for her. Many thanks.
